OK...this is weird...I have been using my computer everyday for the past
three years. Purchased from DELL with software on it... I come home today to
find this weird message saying my Windows Software is not genuine and I can
not make critical updates to it??? Please note that this is not a virus
either because when i checked it on Microsoft.com, it told me that the
software is not valid. How did this happen...what can I do? What the heck
is this about?? Anyone?

Maybe a false positive from the WGA tool?
I believe there is a specific ng/forum for these problems, I'm sure someone
will post it

Call Dell. Apparently a lot of Dell computers have been flagged as not
"genuine". Hopefully, Dell will sue Microsoft and this spyware/malware
will be discontinued.

Please download and install:

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...3-2f04233a78a6/WindowsXP-KB905474-ENU-x86.exe

Then re-boot Windows. Does this resolve the issue?

If not, then:

Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure:

1. Download and install the MGA Diagnostic Tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

2. After running the MGA Diagnostic Tool, click
on the "Windows" tab and then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the
"WGA Validation Problems" forum and paste the
results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed post.
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and
recommend an appropriate solution.

Again, the reason why a paying customer should have to jump through
these hoops due to the flawed nature of an "update" that has no benefit
to the end user is? Does MS want to make sure that this is the worst PR
move in history?

That isn't going far enough. These computer manufacturers should stop
bundling this toy operating system with their computers or at the very
least give the consumer a CHOICE as to what o/s they want installed on
their new box.

There's a computer store chain in Spain that will build a computer for
you. If you want XP, you gotta pay for a generic OEM XP. If you want
Linux, they'll install it for you FREE. If you read Spanish, check it
out here:

http://www.pcbox.com/inicio/default.asp?lan=es&cnt=es

They've been doing this for years.

==> Here we are three years later, and I'm getting pinged by MS for supposedly not passing the Genuine test, although I bought this box from E-Machines. There was a horrible crash last year and I had it repaired. If the repair causes the fail on Genuine Microsoft, isn't it because MS didn't build me an operating system strong enough for the real world that I paid for with the new machine?

Who repaired it and how did they repair it? Disreputable shops have been
known to reinstall Windows using pirated CDs. If that's the case, you're up
the proverbial creek.
