count pivot tables

My raw table has a bunch of text in it. When I go to pivot, it shows the
field to drag and drop, but when I drop it, it shows as "Count". If I try to
change the field settings, it only allows me to change to another calc (SUM,
etc) and none of the options leave it as the raw text. HELP!
 
A pivot table will show the text from text fields in the row, column or
page areas, but not in the data area. In the data area, it's summarized
by count.
