Could Removing a Router Cause Intermittent Connection Problems???

I know that adding a router can cause problems, but last week my
daughter went back to college and I removed the router that my cable
modem was connected to & then to my pc by ethernet cable.

I've experienced intermittent email and internet connection problems
for a week or two, but can't say for sure whether the problem came
before or after the router went away.

The problem either fixes itself or goes away after re-booting the
pc.....90% of the time, everything works OK.

(Time Warner has been of ZERO help...says it's on my end and I should
contact a pc "expert" and be prepared to re-format my HD!!!)

Hi Phil

You say you removed the router, but have no information about connecting it
back again, which I assume you have done. I would check the connections and
make sure that all of your filters are properly connected. Next I would
suggest that when your connection drops, try and ping the router (usually
you're gateway address) and if this fails, then the problem is definitly with
the connections.
Lastly, formatting your HDD for this is a bit of an overkill, especially if
the problem is with the connections!

The router is back at college and my connection goes right from the
cable modem to my pc via an ethernet cable.

I don't know if my connectivity problems happened before or after the
router went away, but it's pretty annoying when you can't connect and
the cable company just blames everyone else!!!!

I know I have an intermittent problem and that's part of the problem
figuring it out, but with a direct connection from the modem to the
pc, I'm hoping for a little more diagnostic advise than "be prepared
to re-format!!!!!!!!!!"

Some things to try:

Turn off the computer, and unplug the modem for five minutes. Then plug
the modem back in, and wait for all the lights to come on and enter the
normal state (some steady, one or two blinking randomly). Then turn the
computer back on.

Check the Local Area Connection properties. The properties for TCP/IP
should be set to obtain an IP address automatically.

Go to Start, Run, and enter "cmd" then enter "ipconfig /release". After
the confirmation, enter "ipconfig /renew" then close all open windows
and restart the computer.

Also, your Internet provider can probably help if all else fails. (I
hate calling technical support, but sometimes that is what it takes.)

After losing the connection, resetting the modem has never been
necessary since a computer re-boot alone has always restored the
connection.

Time Warner Cable had me reset the modem a few times and it never
provided a long-term fix for my intermittent connection problem.....

TCP/IP is already set to obtain an IP address automatically.

I can try your "ipconfig /release" suggestion, but since re-booting
always has fixed the connection problem anyways, is this of any value?

thnx for your help!!!
