Corrupted Vista installation - Re-install Vista from scratch from hard drive - new pc

Hello,

My neighbour recently bought a new Compaq desktop with Vista home premium.
As usual, when 1st switching on, the pc started to 'install' and configure
Vista from somewhere on its hard drive. Unfortunately my neighbour became
impatient during the configuration process (the pc was not showing any
'progress bars' , assumed that something was wrong, and started pressing
various keys at random to try to get the pc to respond.

The result is that the installation was corrupted or incomplete. When
booting up Vista appears to start OK, then suddenly displays an error
message, and reboots. This seems to give a working operating system ??

It is difficult to diagnose what has happened, and what is happening. The
Compaq help files are unhelpful.

I think he should re-install the system from scratch. How does he go about
re-installing the operating system from the 'factory' hard drive condition
?

Help please

Thanks for all help & advice
