Corrupted TCP/IP Network Stack?? HELP PLEASE!!!

B

Brad

I am unable to connect to the internet or any other
programs requiring me to be online. I am on a home
network where the cable modem feeds directly to a router,
and the router then connects to two computers, both
running XP. One computer on the network works fine,
while mine refuses to detect any IP address or ping to
anything. I know the problem does not lie in any of the
hardware because I 1) swapped network cards, 2) tested
both computers and network cards through both ethernet
wires from the router, and 3) cold booted the modem and
router; still, the problem computer refused to connect to
the internet or detect an IP address, while the
functioning computer worked fine with both network cards
and at both locations. I have seen many other reported
problems similar to mine, yet they usually include
problems with anti-virus software such as McAffe or
Novell, when I am not using any Firewalls or Virus-
Protection software (although I do not believe it is a
virus problem). I have tried removing and re-installing
the Network Card settings, drivers, etc. through hardware
manager and still no luck. I have also unchecked and re-
checked the Networking Services component in the Windows
Components Wizard to try and fix the problem but still no
luck, each time I attempt re-installing the Network
Services an error appears stating "One or more services
for the Simple TCP/IP Services component took more than
their alotted time to start.", and I have also noticed
now that when the Network Services component is checked,
whenever I reboot my computer, the taskbar works for
approximately 2 seconds before locking up. This taskbar
problem, however, does not exist when the Network
Services component is unchecked. I have even tried
repairing Windows XP by booting from the install disk and
choosing to repair, still to no avail at fixing the
problem. I would appreciate any help with this problem,
is it possibly some new virus? or is there some registry
entry I could change? I am at a loss of what else to try
besides formatting C:\ and reinstalling Windows which
would be an extreme last resort. Please Help...

(ps.. everything other program on the computer works fine
except for those requiring connectivity)

Brad,
I have a slightly similar problem. My ISP is Comcast and a cable modem. No
complaints there.
When I use the connection for anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour, the screen
locks and the cursor turns
into the hourglass (no error messages). Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring up the Task
Manager but can't click on
any function. Only a mechanical reset will make the computer reboot.

This happens even when I have all of the memory resident programs shut down,
firewall off and virus software off.
I hope that we may get both of our issues resolved.

Regards.
