Corrupted OS

-Upgraded OS on wife's computer several years ago from Me to XP Home Ed.
-Currently upgraded home with fiber optics and installed net cards in all
the older computers
-Installed a net card in wife's computer. When I turned on the computer it
tried to identify the new hardware and also upgrade to IE-7 at the same time.
Well it locked up. So I turned it off and restarted it.
-The computer now tries to load Me and states there are missing files.
-Tried using the XP upgrade disk to correct corrupted files or re-install
the upgrade OS, but now the upgrade will not recognize the original Me or
open the upgrade XP OS program, and request that a Me CD be inserted before
proceeding. Well I have trashed these Me disks a long time ago.
-Any ideas how I can get around this problem???

You likely cannot, without an earlier edition win to use to qualify the
upgrade.
When you use an upgrade version of win, the older version becomes part of
your licence for the upgrade version, lose the older version also means
losing your licence.
Most any earlier version would be a qualifying version for upgrade purposes

You need to borrow another ME or 98SE CD. That's pretty much your range
of options aside from buying a new retail non-upgrade XP license.

You only need the ME CD for a few minutes.

You are now aware of this, but the ME CD needed to be kept with the XP
upgrade CD, as it's what is used in the upgrade qualification check.
