Corrupted Jpeg Files after SP1 Install

After installing SP1 for Windows XP: Home All of my jpeg
files saved on my hard disk have become corrupted. IE
they show no preview available. Also Files associated
with quicktime are no longer recognized by quicktime.
Many of these pictures I do not have back ups of. The
files themselves seem to be the issue. I've tried copying
the files to a computer on the network that is running
windows 2000 and that computer is unable to open the
file. I've also tried running a few data recovery
programs on the files themselves, and a system restore
from windows XP. The recovery programs will not work, and
the system restore option is unable to restore to what
windows was before SP1. Any help would be greatly
appricated.

I'm running an HP Pavilion 750C, I know thats not much
info, but it is a start.

Sounds like a virus to me. Do you have a firewall and antivirus program ,
and were they running when you downloaded and installed the SP?

For future reference: Never attempt the installation of a Service Pack
without first backing up your important data.

There are several viruses that can destroy jpeg files.

If you failed to back up your data, particularly photos, then you have to
look at this as a lesson in life. You should not use a hard drive as a
permanent storage device anyway, as any hard drive can fail at any time.

i hope you get it all figured out, but in the future get into the habit of
backing up your important data to CD-R on a regular basis.

Hi

Can you open the jpegs in your normal - or any - image program? System
Restore doesn't monitor data files, so you won't be able to recover them
that way, unfortunately.

As a response to both replies, No I am unable to open the
files with any program. Microsoft Paint, IE, Jpeg Viewer,
and a few photo editing programs I've tried on the other
computer I have mentioned.

The SP was not downloaded. Was installed from a disk. Did
have antivirus running, which is up to date. I've run
tests with it both before and after install and no
viruses were detected. I realize this doesnt always mean
no virus is therem but ts highly unlikely. As for the
disc being the source of the virus, I don't think this is
an issue seeing as the disk was used to update almost
every xp computer at my place of work and none of them
have had the same issue.

Some new information I just found as well. The files that
were corrupted were only in the "My Pictures Folder" any
files outside of that folder are just fine.

Also, this is probably obvious, but I figured it might
shed some light on the situation. The files in "My
Pictures" List the "last modified" date as the date and
time of SP1 install. The uncorrupted files do not.

Hi

I think, that if you can't open the files in any program, then those files
are history. Sorry, but I can't see any other way to open or rescue those
files.

I am no expert so here is my low level thought - have you checked the file
extensions on those particular files to be sure they are the same as the
ones outside of "My Pictures"? The extension should be .jpg. Maybe
something got added (or taken away) from the extension of those particular
files and repairing the extension could make your pictures viewable again.

Answering again, Yes the files outside the My Pictures
folder that were not corrupted ar .jpg files. Also the
file extensions were not changed. I think I have to go
with Mr. Denny on this one and say that those files are
shot.

Anyway, thanks for your insight into the matter.
