Corrupt Word files

I have two working directories that I have been using ot stoer and process
Word documents/files. All the .doc files, when opened, are empty with the
font style listed as Plain Text, Courier New (although the files sizes when
viewed in explorer are listed corectly - I have abackup hat works with which
to ompare them).

I have run a full virus check and anti-spyware check and all have come back
clean. In addition, all the other files (.gif and .pdf as well as .rtf) in
these directories seem to be also effected and cannot be opened. Other .doc
files in other parts of he PC including the same drive do not seem to be
effected. The files that are effected act the same whether viewed in Word or
Notepad and not saving them seems to have no effect: they seem to have been
blighted whilst residing passive/dormant in their directory. Backups of the
directory work fine.

The only things that I have been doing that may be considered remotely out
of the ordinary is scanning documents using an HP printer/scanner, that are
saved in .rtf format and then changed to .doc after being opened in Word. I
have had a look on the Web and on the HP site to see if anyone else has had
similar problems, but no one seems to have.

Any Help would be much appreciated.

In Word, click on File | Open. If "Files of Type" is set to
"Recover text from any file", then change it to "Word documents",
"All Word documents", or "All files". Select a file and click on
Open.
