Corrupt .NET Framework, can't reinstall

Matt Modica

Hello,

Somehow (I don't know how), my .NET 1.1 Framework became corrupt. I noticed
when I tried to open Media Center, which displayed this error:
http://picsorban.com/view.php?pic=error2.png

I did a little searching and discovered I needed to reinstall the .NET
Framework because it was some how "messed up". However, after reinstalling,
the same thing happens. When I try to install SP1 for he .NET Framework and
an update for Media Center, I get this error when installing both:
http://picsorban.com/view.php?pic=error1.png

I discovered I needed to run the .NET Framework cleanup tool, but the one
link I could find to it kept timing out. So now I am stuck.

BTW I did run the System File checker and it did ask for the XP CD (which I
gave it), but towards the end it asked for the 'Windows XP Professional
CD2". I put in disk two that came with the Windows set of disks, but it said
I inserted the wrong CD. I tried disk one, but got the same message. I'm
assuming that might have fixed it, but I can't get it to work.

Running Windows XP MCE. Thanks in advance.

You didn't search very hard. Typing in "net framwework clean up tool" I
found 100's of links, including one from microshit itself!.

Hello Matt Modica:
I gave these instructions to another poster who did not have MCE but they
also should apply to your case.

(snip..) , here are the full instructions to
correct this problem:

First, check that your version of Windows Installer is 3.1.4000.4039 by
typing at the Start menu Run "%systemroot%\system32" and then select the
file "msi.dll" . Under File|"properties" for this file you can see the
version number. In case it is not 3.1.4000.4039, then first install security
update KB927891 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891 . (snip..)
Now you need (snip...) a special deinstallation tool :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=7a4efc33-0343-4ee4-b0c4-97bd16967a09 .
Download and run the uninstall cleanup program.
Next, reinstall DotNet Framework 1.1 sp1 :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=281fb2cd-c715-4f05-a01f-0455d2d9ebfb .
Restart Windows XP.
Download the update KB928366 which you are trying to install :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=281fb2cd-c715-4f05-a01f-0455d2d9ebfb .
(snip...) .

Matt,

..NET Framework 1.1 does NOT come with MCE.

How to repair the .NET Framework 1.0 that ships as part of the OS on
Media Center and Tablet PC
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/09/01/459631.aspx

You can use this tool to remove it IF it will not uninstall from
Add/Remove Programs:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx

Extract it to the Desktop and open the dotnetfx_cleanup_tool folder
Run cleanup_tool.exe, click Yes, agree to the EULA, and set the drop
down window to
..NET Framework 1.1
Click the Cleanup Now button
[ 3 log files will be created in Documents and
Settings\<YourUserAccount>\Local Settings\Temp
cleanup_actions.log
cleanup_errors.log
cleanup_main.log
You can view them by going to Start > Run > type in [or copy%paste]

%userprofile%\local settings\temp
Click OK]

Download and SAVE :
..Net Framework 1.1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en
dotnetfx.exe

..Net Framework 1.1 SP1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4f-088e-40b2-bbdb-a83353618b38&displaylang=en
NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe

KB928366:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cd-c715-4f05-a01f-0455d2d9ebfb&DisplayLang=en
NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe

**Totally** disable the installed antivirus software prior to installing
the above. Pleaes consult the Help file or the manufacturer's web site
to learn how. You may want to disconnect the system from the network or
the internet if on broadband.

Close all open programs and IE.
Install dotnetfx.exe, restart if requested to
Then install NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe and NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe,
restarting ANY time if prompted to.

*REENABLE* the installed AV afterwards prior to reconnecting the system
to the network or internet.
