Corrupt/Missing File after upgrade

Kate

Greetings!

I have a Dell Latitude laptop which was running Windows
98. I ran the compatability checker before beginning the
upgrade to Windows XP Home - nothing major reported as
possible conflict.

I don't know how far into the upgrade it got, but
suddenly a DOS screen appeared with the following
message: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

After I fainted and got back in my seat, I decided to
come out here and ask for help. HELP!

Is this a fix that I can do? How would I reinstall this
if the system won't boot?

Your help is most appreciated.

Sincerely,

Kate Ross

Not too sure what to say about your Laptop - you have not identified the model / type etc.

You can attempt to access the BIOS, if you know how and change the boot sequence to CD - HDD - FDD and then restart your PC and bootup from the XP Home CD.

Try to upgrade again from here.
