I havent seen any config that smartctl on the knoppix CD cant
see the drives, and I would be interested to hear if it cant.

Its a command line ute.

Not all, but most, yes, and the air doesn't need to be cold - the drive
just needs some air flowing over it. Doesn't need to be a lot.

Yep, it's not hard to keep them cool but does require the
airflow and at least moderate ambient temps (or slightly
more airflow). Passive air intake can cool them fine, in a
properly set up case. Many cases aren't properly set up.
