Corrupt extensions

Windows upon a disk check, moved a bunch of files over to a recovery folder.
All the files now have file#.bak I have been able to rename a few with
correct extensions manually (JPG, DOC, etc) but I was wondering if there is a
utility that would automatically add the correct extension based on header
information or something.
