I want to copy the full directory path of a file into a document (actually an
Access database). Word can find this information and insert it into a
footer, so it must be accessible to Windows programmes.

However, I cannot see a command (in Windows Explorer) that will copy the
path as text in order to paste it somewhere else. Windows keeps wanting to
manipulate the file and its contents.

Google for PathCopy (one word). It is a small freeware program that will add
an item to the context menu (right click) allowing you to copy the full
path.

Well, why not try a better file manager, for example XYplorer?!

In XYplorer (shareware file manager):

A simple Ctrl+P does copy the full path/file of all selected items to the
clipboard.
And Ctrl+Shift+P does copy the full path (without file) of all selected
items to the clipboard.

Apart from this there are one or two other things that XYplorer does better
than the cave man's file manager (WE),

Check it out: http://www.xyplorer.com/
