Copying files

My question involves copying files from my desktop (XP)
to my laptop (98se). I copied a folder containing all
Xcel files and one word file. The Word fileworks. The
Xcel files come up as one page on the screen but do not
allow me to access the page in any way. Is the problem
that 98se uses Microsoft Works and XP uses Xcel as such?
Thanks for your help

MS WORKS is a simple program that includes a word processor,
spreadsheet and a database, but it is a single page database
and/or spreadsheet. To use EXCEL files you need EXCEL which
is part of OFFICE or available stand-alone.
You need to spend some money. Your version of WORKS may be
the WORKS SUITE which includes WORD.

No, that's not the problem. Windows 98SE does not use Microsoft
Works and Windows XP does not use Excel.

Both Works and Excel are application programs. Neither Windows
98SE, Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows comes with
either Works or Excel, nor with any other significant application
software. *Some* vendors may bundle such products with the
computers they sell, but that's up to the vendor; Windows itself
comes with nothing.

The problem is that you have Excel installed on your desktop, but
not on your laptop. If you want to do this, you need to buy a
copy of Excel (or Microsoft Office, which includes Excel) and
install it on your laptop. Be careful however! The latest version
of Excel (Excel 2003) will not run on Windows 98SE.

However, if all you want to do is view existing Excel
spreadsheets, rather than create them yourself, you don't need a
copy of Excel. You can download a free Excel viewer at
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/xlviewer.aspx
