Copying and restoring user profiles

I've spent a lot of time researching the following question but so
far, no joy. Anyone know of a good way to manually backup and restore
a user profile in XP and Windows 2000? I've tried to use the "Copy
To" function in the System Properties/User Profiles tab, but it seems
(correct me if I'm wrong) there are several problems with this:
1. It doesn't copy everything in the profile folder (at a minimum it
doesn't copy the local settings folder, possibly other stuff that I
have not yet identified)
2. I can't figure out how to restore it once I have copied it
elsewhere. What is the point in copying it to some other location if
you can't get it back (i.e., restore it) from that location?

Thanks very much

I've been trying to figure this out myself

Logged on yesterday to find that my primary XP Pro user profile had been zapped into Backup Status and I could only log on to the default profile under my user name. After getting in and looking under the SYSTEM/ADVANCED/Profiles section, I see that my user profile name has been saved as a backup. The thing is, I don't know how to restore it.

I've searched the net for the last 24 hours to find an informed and coherent way to restore.

It amazes me that this could happen to anyone, beginner, intermediate of power user.........and no easy way to find a way out

I hope someone that reallly knows XP Pro jumps in on this question.
