Hi

I have installed Windows XP on hd 1 (17GB), how do I copy it to hd 2 (120GB)

I have tried to make a simple file copy using explorer. I started up from
another computer, so I didn't boot from hd 1.
When I now boot on hd 2, Windows almost starts up, it hangs during startup
on a blue Windows XP screen (not the blue screen of death), I can move the
mouse cursor around, but nothing happends, and ctrl+alt+del doesn't do
something either.

Can anybody help me with this?

Typically new hard drives will come with utilities that allow you to copy
files from an existing hard drive, to the new one so that it will then boot.

Baring that, I believe you'd have to get a 3rd party utility to do what you
need. I think Partition Magic has such a feature, but I'm not 100% certain.

Windows will not boot from a separate HDD unless you INSTALL it on
there. NOT copy it.

Norton Ghost allows you to transfer your OS from one drive to another
when you upgrade your hard drives.

...as well as providing some back up facilities too

Karsten,
You cannot do it with Windows. You can do it with an Imaging program like
Ghost 2005 or Acronis True image http://www.acronis.com/
which is a general backup program
or CasparXP which is intenned just for that purpose
http://www.fssdev.com/

If you want to boot from the copy disk while leaving the system disk in
place, there are some technical problems and you can get help on that from
CasparXp support--

Go to the website of the manufacturer of your new hard drive and
download their free disk copying utility.

Good luck

I have tried to make a simple file copy using explorer. I started up from
another computer, so I didn't boot from hd 1.

That does not work; it fails to copy a lot of files (especially
registry)

What I use is BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware -
30 day full functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng to
make a boot floppy.

Boot the floppy, Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on
Partition work. First select your new drive, (HD1) and select and
delete the partition you made. Now select HD0, Highlight your C:,Copy,
then on left select the new drive (HD1), highlight the Free Space in
it, and Paste.

You might then consider a resize up a bit. But not much; 17 GB is
quite a suitable size for system and programs, leave some free space so
as later to make a new separate partition it for data

Now click on 'View MBR' and in it highlight the entry for this new C
partition and click the 'Set Active' Click 'Write Standard MBR' and
Apply.

Close out, swap the disks to make the new one the one that boots, and
reboot into XP.
