Copy WinXP to old computer

Sometime in November I am planning to take my old computer out of the
basement, purge the harddrive, and put WinXP on it.
I was wondering if I will be able to "ghost" WinXP on my newer computer to
my old one? I don't know if this is legal. WIndows XP was preinstalled (on my
newer machine).
I think my old computer's harddrive was around 20gigs??

Mark;
If Windows XP came preinstalled, it is OEM.
OEM is normally permanently tied to the first computer regardless the
condition of the original computer.
Also since the hardware is different, ghosting will probably not work.
Finally, Windows is one license one computer, the way it has always
been with all consumer Microsoft operating systems since at least
Windows 95

If you want Windows XP on that computer, you need to buy another
Windows XP for that computer.

"Legal" is a matter of contention around here. Read the
EULA and decide for yourself. What you want to do
probably won't work anyway, however, as the OEM XP on the
new machine is probably BIOS-locked to that machine. Even
if it weren't, you would have to do a repair install and
would possibly have activation issues.

NOT legal. The "preinstalled" OS is an OEM version which is licensed
only to the first computer its installed on. It cannot be moved to
another, even if the first is destroyed.

No, it's not. You need a second copy.
The rule is quite clear. It's one copy (or one license) for each
computer.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's
been in effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows
3.1. The only thing new with XP is that there's now an
enforcement mechanism.

WIndows XP was
preinstalled (on my newer machine).

In that case, it may not even work on any other machine.

Perhaps you should read the EULA if you think there is a chance the
EULA allows installing on more than one computer at a time.
You will discover otherwise.

You're welcome. Glad to help.

By the way, I should have asked in my original reply--how old is
your old computer and what is its configuration? If it's more
than a few years old, it may well be inadequate for Windows XP.

No it isn't. Windows (all versions) is supplied as a license to use, on
a single machine (other than special volume licenses), and now there is
the Product activation system to bring the point home

Yes, I understand.
Well the old computer has Windows 98 SE on it and I think I got it in the
christmas of '99, and I believe last year I got a digital camera for
christmas and installed the Kodak EasyShare software that came with it, and
it's been acting up ever since.
