Copy local user and computer settings to another XP Pro

Hi all

I am struggling to copy local user and computer settings between XP
workstations. My setup at the moment is an NT4 domain. We are now needing
to move to XP.

I have set numerous local policy's on one workstation I intend to release to
users but I can't figure out how to export all the settings I have defined.
Could someone advise me how I copy settings created in Local Group Policy
other XP workstations so I get a consistent build until I have AD available
to me.

Thanks
Lee

Hi Lee-

This is really dependent on the settings you are interested in. If you are
setting them in local policy using GPEDIT.MSC then these settings can also
be set in a group policy object (GPO) if you have a Windows 2000 or 2003
domain environment.

If they are a wide range of settings with some being inaccesible from the
GPEDIT.MSC then you may need to consider other options-again, dependant on
the settings themselves.

What are the settings?

A wide variety of settings.

Including Internet proxy/Home Page
Security policy such as changing to default prompt to change password from
14 days to 2 days.
Adding NT domain groups as local admins

...pretty much a variety of settings changed via the local Group Policy

I was expecting to be able to save the settings as a template, then copy it
to another XP workstation and load it up so the settings are identical.

We are not going to have a AD domain available to us for at least 6 months.
Our XP usage is going to increase during this time.

Any further pointers greatly appreciated.
