Cooling

If one has 4 HD, 3 of them 10K Raptors which can put out some heat does it make
more sense to mount all 4 of them in the HD rack in my Lian Li case which has 2
fans directly in front of this rack or mount 2 there and the other 2 in
different 3 1/2 inch bays to separate them, but there are no fans in front of
the other bay.

Howard,

Who make that case ?

I've got a friend that installed 6 HD in is case. He made sure that they
won't over heat by placing them on the bottom of the tower, with non
conductive spacer that help for the air flow with two Power supply fans
blowing air from the front. the only thing that keep that from moving, is
the four screws holding the first HD at the bottom and Tie Wraps holding the
internal tower with the two fans in front of that stack.

He even place a thermal sensor with the temp output in the font of the case.
And the HD's are well in the temp operation range for 7200rpm HD.

According to a couple of recent web articles (I lost the URLs) by guys
who did some experiments, the bulk of heat transfer from HDDs is
through their sides into the racks. (They both found ways to improve
the cooling of the sides via custom heat sinks and didn't bother with
special cooling of the top and/or bottom. They needed to add heat
sinks because they were adding sound & vibration (& heat!) insulation
between the HDDs and the racks.)

Assuming that that is true, it's easy to guess that it would be much
better to spread your HDDs between two racks. (The increased space
between any two HDDs wouldn't hurt, either, even if top and bottom
cooling are relatively unimportant.)

John, It's a Lian Li case. There is a removable rack, similar to what you
describe at the bottom of the case that holds 6 HD on their sides and has 2
front case fans directly in front of the hard drives. I ended up putting 2 on
one side of this rach and 2 on the other with blank space large enough to have
fit 2 drives in the middle.
