Cookies not accepted

More and more, I am running into sites for which my computer will not accept
cookies. These are reputable sites, which I have been accessing for years. A
link is given to a help screen, but nothing suggested seems to work.
Any thoughts?
 
What browser? Version?
What security software? Ca? McAfee? Norton? ....
OS Version?
Patch Level?

**I have security settings at medium. An example of one thing I tried was to
purchase a piece of software (download) It would not recognize it, and gave
me the message:
"To add items to your shopping cart, you must enable cookies. The ordering
process requires a cookie to be set on your computer to provide access to
our secure server for processing your credit card transaction, downloading
software, and checking the status of your order. To enable cookies, please
reference your browser's help section."
 
IE6 is browser and version. Security software is Panda 2006 Antivirus. OS
is WinXP Pro (media Centre Edition)
 
Hi again,

The handling of cookies would be set in the Privacy section of Internet
Options. Try setting it - at least temporarily - to its lowest setting.
