Cookies activated but still demand to logon all the time

B

Bernd Brenner

Hello Users,

I have a cookie problem: althogh I think that I activated all cookies
in the options of Internet Explorer, my bugzilla webpage asks me to
login after every action I do or every link I click in Bugzilla.
(www.bugzilla.org). So it seems the browser does not accept the session
cookie.

In the InternetExploerer I activated "Accept" for Cookies from "First
and Second Page" (sorry I don't know the exact translation in english,
because I have a german version installed). "Allow Session cookies" is
also activated.

Does anyone have a hint for me what could be wrong?

Thanks a lot,
Bernd

Hi Bernd :)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, try the
following and see if it helps:

Sometimes, for whatever reason, an update, new program installation, etc.,
some settings can get changed, or even overridden or blocked.

Go to IE>Tools>Internet Options>Privacy tab
Click the Advanced button
Check the box next to "Override automatic cookie handling"

If you have Adaware or SpyBot, check to make sure they are not blocking your
Cookies.

Be sure to check your firewall settings

Make sure that your computer's clock is set to the correct time and time
zone.

Check the settings of *all* 3rd party toolbars, popup or ad blockers or
security/privacy programs to see if one of them is blocking cookies. Many
such programs have this feature.

also..

Go to Internet Options> Privacy, set the slider to Accept All, as a test.

Go to your Cookies folder and delete any cookies from sites which you are
having the problem with, as the they may have become corrupted and let the
site create a new one the next time you go there.

and...check the information here:
Managing Cookies

If still no joy, try the following:

Re-register the following .dlls
Go to Start->Run. Type
regsvr32 urlmon.dll and then click OK. Repeat for each of the following one
at a time and pressing enter after each one:

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll

and.....

Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
Scroll down to the Security Settings.
Make sure that the two boxes are checked that say
"Enable SSL 2" or "Enable SSL 3".

Hope this helps.

I have a similar issue (on 2 pc's, others with seemingly the same setup
don't have the problem)
Both XPPro with latest IE6 with all updates
After last weeks security updates all cookies are blocked no matter
settings I choose
(allow all cookies, low security settings, adding the site to trusted
sites, etc, deleting all temp files and cookies) (Netscape 7.2 works
fine)

One thing that didn't work from the above suggestions was
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll

I get a msg back that it failed with error code: 0x80070005

Hi dean :)

Please post the exact wording of the error. Often, numbers and words will
give us a better clue as to what is causing the problem.

A msgbox window:
Title: RegSvr32
Yellow caution sign:
DllRegisterServer in Shdocvw.dll failed.
Return code was: 0x80070005
OK button

IExplorer seems to work fine with everything else (as does the pc)
Just that cookie problem

For example, if I try msn.com, the Privacy Report red icon lights up on
the bottom right of iexplorer and shows that cookies are blocked - I
can try everything to allow it, but it always stays blocked

Thanks for helping out!

Hi dean :)

Were you logged on as Administrator when you tried to re-register the
Shdocvw.dll file? Try logging on as the true Administrator account, not a
new Admin account, and try it from there.
http://www.it-faq.pl/mskb/827/659.HTM
If you still can't re-register the Shdocvw.dll then take a look at the other
suggestions, try this one

Go to start/run
Type in: regsvr32 softpub.dll
Press Enter or click OK

Also...did you check the User account Cookies folder and see if there is a
Cookie listed in it for that sight, and if so, delete it? I can't see what
you have on your system or what settings you have, so I will have to rely on
you to be my eyes and look at the obvious items you have installed that may
have settings or features I have described that might be blocking the
cookies from being downloaded or renewed.

also.....

Tools>Internet Options>Privacy
Click Sites.
Enter website you are trying to log on to and click Always Allow:

Check the following:

Cannot browse certain websites
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10082

or..

Go to the following and open with Notepad,
C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS (the one with no extension (not the .SAM one)
Rename it to HOSTOLD, then reboot.

If you have Zone Alarm, you might also check the Trusted area there too:

Also, it is quite possible that during a trip to the Internet after your new
install, perhaps to update, if you did not yet have your AV installed you
could have picked up some form of scumware that is causing the problem.
And...yes, it 'can' happen just that fast.

Be aware, your Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware,
worms, etc., and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such
as AdAware and SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must
also be run in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan
all files. Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does
not mean your system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean
your machine. Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can
replicate themselves repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly. Follow
the steps here:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:

Hope this helps.

I'm logged in as Administrator (always)
regsvr32 softpub.dll worked with no error message
all cookie folders only have index.dat

everything set to allow sites (I can send you screen shots of the
settings if you'd like)

no spyware (4 different programs checking - defender, adawrae, spybot
s&d, ewido)

Netscape 7.2 works fine

IE works fine other than this issue

This is on 2 different pc's

This started (on both pcs, at 2 different locations) after last weeks
windows updates

Hi dean :)

Have you tried uninstalling the update on these machines to see if the
problem is resolved? Try it on one, or, just use system restore to go back
to a date before the update was installed. There must be some settings on
the two problem machines that is causing the update to block only this site
for only two machines. Try a step by step cross-check of the settings and
see if you can find out where the blocker is. Once you have found that
answer, then try installing the update again.

Hope this helps.

That could mean just about anything. E.g. just a general error code
which might be reflecting permissions or other problems.

The best way to get more clues about this symptom
would be to run DependencyWalker profiling the command execution.
Take note of the errors logged just before the last line when you are
prompted (i.e., try not to be misled by errors which the log may exhibit
after you click on Ok to dismiss the message window.

Good luck
