Converting WMA to MP3

I had given up on trying this in the past, but now I'm still trying.

I have a 2-fold post, possibly some of you here might be able to help me with
both.
#1 ... I used to use the Plus! Media Converter LE, it was bundled with other
programs in the "Windows Media Bonus Pack for Windows XP" and it was VERY
helpful with easily coverting wma's to mp3's, and switch back again.
I had to reformat my hard drive a short time ago, and I didn't back that
program up (Had it listed on Belarc to find and reinstall later--at that
time it was a freeware bundled other programs from MSN. Now, no matter how
many times I have tried to download the bundle, the Plus! Media converter
does not work correctly. When I give the pathway ( have checked many times
), it gets to the window to start converter, then when I start, it
immediately shows
"Skipped" over every song, and acknowledges that the problem was with the
"bit-rate". I've tried many different choices that it gives regarding the bit
rate, and it still won't work.
Can ANYONE offer any advice ? Has it changed to "purchase" ?
#2 I download my songs and save to CD-RW's and DVD-RW's (more room), then
after I have listened to the disk to see if it was okay, I would erase the
disks (Not just 1 over and over to wear out) for the next download. Now,
these CD's won't erase. Not with Nero or any other programs. Anyone able to
help with this?
I know I've posted a lot, but have been told in the past to give as much
information as possible on a post.

---Thanks for any help ----

It's better to split the post into two separate posts rather than
posting the combined issue twice.

I recall this as being software that required purchasing. There are
plenty of other free->paid alternatives. dbPowerAmp is one option that
is more flexible than the Media Converter.
