converting to dates...

Ø

Øyvind Granberg

Hi...

Excel 2007.
When importing soccer results from another Excel spreadsheet it converts the
data to dates.
The result 1-1, with a dash, is converted to 01.jan.
I have tried to format cells to text, but it does not do the trick.

How can I stop this?

Once the conversion to a date is made there is no going back! Excel has
stored the date as a number like 39782 for today.
Can you get a single quote in front of the score as in '1-1?
Can you make the file a TXT file and not have Excel do the automatic
conversion?
best wishes

well...
I also wanted to import from a table on the web, but this renders this
function total useless.
Totally!!!

I fixed it....

The solution is in the New Query dialog box and the Option button in the
upper right corner.
In the dialog box for query option you can select Deactivate Date
Recognizing.

I knew there had to be a way to stop this behavior, if not it would render
Excel useless for importing data from external sources.....

There MUST be a way to turn off this erratic behavior....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's crazy to change values in peoples spreadsheets like this.
It must be a virus, because I don't want it, and it seems that I can't get
rid of it.... :-((

I am truly flabbergasted!!

But for many people an entry like 2-6 IS a date. Not all Excel users are
sports fans
Paste to a Notepad file;save as TXT file and then open in Excel
Does this help?

Hi,

I'm not sure whether you've solved your problems or not after this last email?

If you are importing from another spreadsheet you can stop the problem by
going to the original spreadsheet and enter =LEFT(A1,15) where A1 is the cell
with the 1-1 in it. Then you can copy this as necessary. Then copy and
paste, special, values to convert the results from formulas. You can copy
these results from the orginal spreadsheet to the new spreadsheet without a
problem.

If this helps, please click the Yes button.

Cheers,
Shane Devenshire

The problem of importing from a website is solved.
There I can disable the function of automatically change values to dates.

My deep felt resignation is about the fact that Excel is changing MY data
during import.
I found that very disturbing.

It happens once or twice, may be more, in a man's life that he needs to
import data from a source he is not the master of.
It should be a natural and safe incident where data is rendered unchanged
from the source to the target!
That as vital for all values and format... Although you could option out
formatting, but never, ever get the data changed during the process of
import or export.

One should think that one's data is not to be changed by others than the
primary source itself, mostly me?

yes, and that is why we import as text.

I consider your proposal a mere work around, not a solution....
But... I'll test this ..

Tested and found not good...
This destroys the formatting i such a wayt that vital number ends up in
different cells every time you import...
Like this:

Bolton - Liverpool 0 - 2 0 - 0 West Ham Utd - PortsmouthLiverpool - West Bromwich 3 - 0 1 - 3 West Ham Utd - Everton
Tottenham - Liverpool 2 - 1 1 - 1 Middlesbrough - West Ham UtdLiverpool - Portsmouth 1 - 0 2 - 0 Manchester Utd - West Ham Utd
Chelsea - Liverpool 0 - 1 0 - 2 West Ham Utd - ArsenalEnd of garbled transmission... :)
