Converting Text to Numbers

I am working on expanding a survey that has rankings such as:
1 - Poor
2 - Fair
3 - Good
4 - Very Good
5 - Outstanding
N/A
Voice Mail

I have been requested to create a report that will show the average scores.
Can anyone tell me how to convert these to numbers that I can then get an
average of.

Use the Val function. It extracts numbers at the beginning of strings until
it hits something that isn't a number or period. for example:

Val("5 - Outstanding") = 5

N/A and Voice Mail will both return 0.
