Converting a Works (.wps) document to a Word (.doc) document

I've downloaded the converter so I can open .wps files in Word 2000. However,
when I open a .wps document, there are a lot of characters that appear before
and after the text. Is that normal or is there something else I should be
doing to get a clean conversion from Works to Word?

The format of Works .wps files has changed in successive versions of Works.
Do you know what version of Works was used to create the .wps you're trying
to open? Which Works converter did you download, and from where? Did you
install the Works converter that comes with Word/Office 2000?

Had read through the abundance of messages posted here and visited the site
for www.gmayer.com/downloads.htm and downloaded the Works Converter for Word.
I also opened Word and went to Tools/Options/General and made sure I checked
the box for "Confirm conversion at Open." I don't know what version of .wps
is being used but thought I had my bases covered with the download. Any idea
what I should do now? ~ Many thanks!

I think Graham Mayor's website offers the old Works 3.x, 4.x, and 5.x
converters that are no longer available from Microsoft. Office 2003 includes
a Works 7.0 converter on the CD, although I don't think it is installed by
default. You might have to add it by clicking on Start | Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs | Microsoft Office | Change | Add/Remove Features. You
can download a Works 6.0 converter from
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318244.

Okay, I uninstalled Office 2003 and reinstalled with all the bells & whistles
(full install). I also went to the Microsoft site you recommended for the
Works 6.0 converter. When I try to open the file now, I get an error message
that it may be corrupted. I can recover it with only a small amount of
correction needing to be made to the document.

I'm still back at my earlier question: If I have an appropriate converter
AND the file is not corrupted, will it convert and lay out in Word in the
format intended by the originator of the Works document?

Thanks again for your help ~ T

When converting from one file format to another, the result is seldom 100%
perfect (but it's nice if it is). If you are able to make the "small amount
of correction" without too much effort, then I'd say to be happy with what
you've got. You might end up putting a bunch more effort into trying to get
the conversion to come out a little bit better, and end up with the same
result or worse.

Hi,

I have used the Microsoft batch conversion tools to convert a Works (.wps)
file to Word2000. The text comes out OK but I have lost all the graphics. Is
there a way to convert/import the graphics from a Works document into Word?

Thanks,
