converting a word doc to a pdf

when I convert a word document to a pdf file, I lose some of the formatting
in the process, such as page breaks, column widths within a table shifts,
tabs are not lining up. Can someone help?

What tool are you using for the conversion? If you are using one of the
cheap or free PDF converters it may be a case of "you get what you pay
for."
