You'll need a third party tool such as PDF2Word or OCR such as Finereader.

Thanks for your quick reply. Do you know if these products convert to text
or text boxes? We have an OCR product that converts to text boxes. I can't
track my changes in text boxes, so I'd rather have just plain text.

I use SolidConverterPDF.
This has 5 levels of covertion, from plain text to Exact (which uses text
boxes).
It is not too bad, pretty quick but obviously can have trouble with complex
header and footers, i.e. the result will have duplicated text from these
areas.
Best of luck, hope this helps.

I think Acrobat Pro does a credible job of converting to rtf or doc. It does
not produce text boxes. It does not preserve style names.

Are you sure your OCR software converts only to formatted text in text
boxes? Textbridge used to do that. OCR software usually has an option to
export to plain text. Finereader certainly does, though it makes a pretty
good stab at formatting also. There's a sister product to PDF2Word called
PDF2Text that does exactly what it says on the tin.

It does, but only if the original was a document and not a graphic of a
document. if you don't already have Acrobat it's an expensive way to find
out ;)

I've never used the OCR software - I've only been told about it. I'll have
to check into it. I would actually rather have formatted than plain text.
I would like to have formatted text that's not in text boxes. That's
probably a lost to ask, though. If the choice is between unformatted text
and formatted text in text boxes, I'm better off with the text boxes.
Thanks for all your help!
