controlling message retrieval

I have very happily succeeded in getting myself extricated from the
grasp of Incredimail. Yaaaaay! It took some doing, but I got my
messages and contact list safely outta there.

I have temporarily reset up OE as my email client while I decide what I
really want to use. I'm using an email notification program that I
like quite a bit and am happy with that ("poptray"). There is now only
ONE thing that I miss from Incredimail. That was the ability to
selectively retrieve my messages. If I saw there was something on the
server with a large attachment, I could opt to download it at a later
time. I also was able to set a preference in Incredimail to always
download smaller messages first, so that they would not be blocked by
messages that might take a longer time.

Does anyone have suggestions of an email software that offers this same
control?

Hmmm. Maybe what I'm asking for here is a email notification program...
I guess I'd like all feedback on how to accomplish the kind of control
I've described. I'd be interested to hear anybody's experience on
this!

Any email MTA/MUA combination that supports IMAP access.

IMAP is designed for just that sort of situation, leaving stuff on a
central server, and optionally downloading it.

I know Mozilla and its sibs do it, you appear to be using one of them,
so it just depends on what services you mailhost offers.

that I don't understand. MTA/MUA ... ?

Can you give me some names? Would Thunderbird offer this kind of
control?

MTA - Mail Transfer Agent - incorrectly referred to as a "mail server".
MUA - Mail User Agent - incorrectly referred to as a "mail client".

I asume Thunderbird has IMAP, as Mozilla does. Just set up the account
that way.

Thanks for these definitions, Gary. I'll give Thunderbird a try first,
as I am pretty happy with Firefox. If I can control the order of the
download, smallest first to largest last, I'll be very happy!

Hmmm. Okay. I've downloaded and installed Thunderbird. I see no
place to control email downloads - smallest first to largest last. Am
I missing a detail here? I've looked through all the "Options" in the
Tools menu, and also "Server Settings" in the Account Settings dialog
box...
