Control Panel - There was a problem sending .....

When I attempt to open the Control Panel from Start > Settings I get
the message: There was a problem sending the command to the program.

I can open the Control Panel from Run > control

What sort of problem might this be?

More data: I thought this was a seperate problem but I realize noe
that I am seeing the same error message.

I have Word closed. I browse my files with Windows Explorer or My
Computer. I select a .doc file and double-click it. Word opens but
the file I selected is not there. I end up with Word open but no doc
open. In Word I can then do a File > Open and browse to the file and
open it that way.

Sometimes when I try to open the file from within Word I get the same
message: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

I solved my problem:

I noticed that the problem went away when I turned off ZoneAlarm, so I
uninstalled ZoneAlarm. Then downloaded the latest free version of
ZoneAlarm and installed it. I am not getting the Control Panel
problem nor the Word doc problem. All is well.

I had the same error today. w2k. Could not open documents from links
on start - documents. also could not click on internet links in email
msgs w/o being prompted for the internet client or something like
that. Disabling zone alarm stopped all of these error messages!

Interestingly, I recently installed an HP Laser Jet 1012 printer.
After that install, zone alarm kept on asking if I wanted two
programs, "javap"?, to access the internet. I had been replying yes,
but since I replied no, the above problem started to occur.

maybe the reinstall of zone alarm undid a restriction by ZA on some
component using IE?
