The icons/tools in my Control Panel > Administrative Tools window have
disappeared. I can't think of anything I've done lately that might cause
this. Any ideas?

There's a fix here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top.
299. List Administrative Tools in Control Panel

admincontrolpanel.reg is the file that you want.

Also...

To add Administrative Tools to the Start menu

Classic Start Menu...
Right click the Start button | Properties | Start Menu tab |
Customize button | Select Display Administrative Tools |
Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

XP Start Menu...
Right click the Start button | Properties | Start Menu tab |
Customize button | Advanced tab | Under System Administrative
Tools | Select Display on the All Programs menu and Start Menu |
Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

Ayush,

The OP is using CDO. They cannot see your attachment, let alone download
it. X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000

You're using OE.
X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180

Right click message in the Message pane | Properties | Details tab

Or Ctrl + F3 to open the Message Source. ;-)

1. Click Start > Run > Copy/Paste the following, click OK:
"%allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools"
2. Make all shortcuts. (Right click new)
3. Here are the default names and targets :
-Services
services.msc

-Performance
perfmon.msc

-Local Security policy
secpol.msc

-Event Viewer
eventvwr.msc

-Data Sources (ODBC)
odbcad32.exe

-Computer Management
compmgmt.msc

-Conputer Services
%systemroot%\system32\Com\comexp.msc

I uploaded all the shortcuts. If you dont want to create all these
manually, just copy the uploaded shortcuts to :
"Documents and settings\All users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative
Tools"

The site below (kellys...) is a great place to be aware of. Thanks.
Unfortunately, importing #299 into the registry didn't correct the situation.
Clicking on Administrative Tools still opens an empty window. I can see the
tools in my Windows folders, they're just not showing up in the Admin Tools
window.

See my reply...
If that doesn't fix the problem, you have to check the Shell Folder path :
1. regedit
2. [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]
3. Right side, set "Administrative Tools" to :
"%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools"
4. [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]
5. Right side, set "Common Administrative Tools" to :
"%allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools"

Dont know how but the attached file contains only one file(not shortcut) so
dont use that.

On the theory that an ounce of prevention... I just want to verify the issue
since some of the comments referred to the Administrative Tools folder in the
Start menu. I can see, and open, all the tools in the Administrative Tools
folder in the Start menu. Its the Administrative Tools folder in the Control
Panel that's at issue. That's the empty folder. Based on the above, does
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/admintools.htm still seem like the way to proceed?

Problem cause: self-inflicted pain... at one time I must have decided to
create a start program folder with all the tools so I copied them, or thought
I copied them, from the administrative tools folder on C: . In fact, I must
have moved them rather than copied. I only figured this out today, due to
all your help, I started looking at my Administrative Tools folder(s) and
discovered that the one on C: kept recreating itself after I deleted it
(cause it was empty :-). Finally, it dawned on me that it must be recreating
itself for a reason, and so on a hunch, I copied all the shortcuts from the
Administrative Tools folder I had created in the Start menu and lo and behold!

Sheesh.... now I'm feeling a little foolish about taking your time....
thanks again to all

You are not the first one to think that they copied something when they
really moved it and you will not be the last. ;-)

Glad you got it figured out. Keep having fun.
