Control and Shift Key Combinations Not Working

G

Guest

I'm using a standard keyboard and Windows XP. Recently had a new motherboard installed and now control and shift key combinations don't work. Example: Ctrl-F6 used to cycle between open windows does not work; Ctrl-F4 to close current window doesn't work
Any ideas why?

The Shift keys are the Shift keys. There are two of them.
F1 through F12 are called the Function keys.
-----------------------------
Open Help and Support and type: keyboard shortcuts | ENTER |
Look for: "Windows keyboard shortcuts overview"
------------------------------
Close current Window Ctrl+W

Switch between open items. ALT+TAB

Cycle through screen elements in a window or on the desktop. F6

Close the active document in programs that allow
you to have multiple documents open simultaneously. CTRL+F4

Close the active item, or quit the active program. ALT+F4

Yes, thanks. I know these keys. However, using Ctrl F6 to cycle between open screen elements does not work. In fact most of those you have listed no longer work.

FES;
CTRL+F6 Go to the next window or document in MS Word

F6 key (Cycle through the screen elements in a window or on the desktop)

Did you have some custom keys set??

Try this:
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Keyboard |
Hardware tab | Properties button | Check out the Driver |
Or Troubleshoot button

Yes - tried all of those things, but it still doesn't work. And no, I have not set any custom keys.
They worked just fine until we installed the new Intel motherboard and updated the BIOS
We'll keep looking
Thanks for your suggestions.

FES;
Try swapping keyboards. Take yours to a friends
machine and see if it works. Borrow one from a friend.

Yes, we tried that, too. We had a few different keyboards here and I tried all of them. I've also looked at every aspect of software settings and everything seems to be in order. I am a strong user of keyboard shortcuts and find it difficult to work without them. The Newsgroup was my last hope. I'm not giving up.

Try reposting at
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

IF you've tried everything mentioned in this
thread, I don't know any more.

We've got a real similar sounding deal at our house.
Problem is I don't know if it's been that way from the
beginning because I don't use this machine very often.

CTRL, Win logo, ALT (both sides of space bar) do nothing. I
agree it's annoying. Uninstalled keyboard driver. Plugged
in different keyboard, same thing. Bought and installed USB
keyboard, same thing.

DOS boot, CTRL C works, ^C shows up. Command prompt from
Windows doesn't give the ^C.

Spent an hour on the phone with Sony tech. support before
they finally resorted to recommending system recovery. I
don't want to do that if at all possible. Suspect something
in the registry now. Have seen a possibility by searching
for ways to disable these keys.

Help please, thanks.
