Continue usage of hard disk despite broken sectors

Hello!

I got here a IBM-DTLA-307030-(30GB)-hard disk. It shows slight cluster
damage:
LBA 010DCFF3 to LBA 010DD00C (If I wrote down the values properly.)
(These values are given by the IBM DFT (Drive Fitness Tool).)
The data/files on this disk could be saved, with the loss of only an
unimportant file of 50MB size. The resulting loss tends to zero (0).

My speculations after plenty of tests is, that the disk indeed is
damaged only on this "little" spot. Therefor I want to try to "fix" the
disk for usage of "unimportant" data.

If I wanted to partition and reformat the disk under Linux, I would do
this with a mkfs.* program which I would pass a list of broken sectors.

As far as I know the "# badblocks" is resonsible for this. I did let it
run on my disk for about 8 turns in destructable write-/read-mode (3
pattern-runs per turn). The result was disillusioning: "# badblocks" did
NOT find ANY error, even if he brought the dsik to do the "funny"
("clack clack") noises on hitting the broken parts/clusters.

(The IBM DFT (Drive Fitness Tool) has an option for "repairing" broken
clusters. Within this function the DFT tries to repair the files(!) on
FAT, FAT32 or NTFS f/s by moving them to space unused and updating the
FAT/tree/... . A "real repairing" of clusters is not the case.)

Accordingly I wish to find a solution to format the disk by skipping the
broken clusters.

I know that this subject gets in conflict with data security/data
reliability, but I DO NOT have the resources in throwing away an
"almost" functional 30GB.

I would be happy on ideas and suggestions how to do this (maybe with Linux).

Have a nice day, Stephen

Hi Steven you say the drive is `almost functional`. Most of us would say the
drive is dodgy, and almost scrap. Get your stuff off it and hit it with a
big hammer. There`s a good man. New drives are not expensive now, and if
your a bit short in the pocket, tell everyone what you want for your
birthday. best wishes..J
