Boot off of the Windows XP CD and perform a repair installation.

What make and model is the computer?

We need the full text of the error message which appears when you get
what is called the blue screen of death. Have you tried pressing the F8
key during Start Up and selecting Last Known Good Configuration.

I suggest you Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should
help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Enable automatic restart on system failure after you have captured /
copied the message in a further post here.

I would also try using System Restore to go back to a restore point
before the problem arose.
http://bertk.mvps.org/

An error report should also appear in the System log of Event Viewer.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. Please post a copy of that report.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

I am having this problem too. I cannot get to anything but the safemode, and
that makes no difference at all. I have an emachine W2060. It keeps
rebooting when it gets to the welcome page of windows. HELP!!!! Also I
cannot get to the c prompt either.

see if you can get to safe mode w/command prompt only.
run chkdsk /r from the command prompt.

I cannot get to the command prompt. I do the F8, then select safe mode with
command prompt. It takes me to a page that temporaily stops at
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys
then it will go to a screen that says that it is in safe mode, but I cannot
do anything because then it immediately reboots.

That was going to be my next option but now when i use the recovery console
from the windows cd it says that my hard drive is not found and i should make
sure that it is plugged in and turned on. I checked the plugs and wires and
everything is connected like it should be. The HDD is a Western Digital 72GB
SATA that needs to have a special driver installed from a floppy disk
whenever I install or repair windows. After installing teh drivers from the
floppy Windows setup continues to copy files and then it hangs on "Examining
70905 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on viasraid..." am using an abit av8
motherboard with the KT800 chipset (pretty sure) amd 3500 2x512 ddr400mhz
with ati 9700 pro. This is unbelieveable because i have never had any
problems with this machine before and just the night before the computer was
working perfectly fine then when i got home from school at around noon i
tried to turn it on and it seems to have "lost" the HDD or it was sabotaged,
and both scenarios seem impossible.

George try to establish if there is a problem with your hard disk. If you go
to the Western Digital web site http://support.wdc.com/download/ Type into
the box provided the model of your Hard Drive then select Data Lifeguard
Diagnostic either floppy or CD from the listbox on the right. This will
enable you to create a boot disk to run a series of hard disk tests. (If you
decide to make a diagnostic CD you will probably have to set your PC bios to
boot from CD)

If there is a hardware problem the diagnostic will find it. If the hard disk
passes these tests then Windows XP is the source of the problem. The next
thing to check is the partitions on the hard disk. Go to
http://www.ptdd.com/ and download a demo version of Partition Table Doctor.
This will tell you if the hard disk partitions are corrupt. Now if the hard
disk and the partitions are ok you need to turn your attention to XP itself.
To be honest it is often quicker to reinstall Windows completely rather than
spend days tracking down an evasive problem. Repairing Windows from the CD
rarely works in my experience and remember the repair will reflect XP as it
was when the CD was produced. I would do a parallel instal of XP. This just
involves booting the PC from the Windows CD. It will detect an existing
installation and ask if you want to repair or install a new copy of Windows.
Choose the latter and just opt to install to a different folder. So if your
existing root folder is c:\windows you might choose c:\winxp for the new
install. Windows will take about 30 minutes to install-remember to press F6
during the early stage of installation to install your Sata drive
controller. With any luck your new installation will complete successfully
and you will be able to see your data and personal files from the previous
install. Copy everything you need and then delete the old install folder ie
c:\windows or whatever you may have called it . Hope that helps.

What is the make and model of your computer. Is the Windows SP2 update
installed?

Does any error message flash across the screen immediately before it
fails when booting in normal mode. A Stop Error code would help.

Thanks anyway, I am probably going to have to buy another computer. IF I
happen to get it fixed, I will come back and post it if you want.

try the recovery disc before going out and buying a new computer

otherwise, maybe someone can help you replace your hard drive.

if you 'must' have a usable computer right now, I guess you could go buy
one, if you have the resources.

That your hard drive was "lost" all of the sudden indicates that either your
drive or your SATA connection is kapuyt. Try plugging your HDD into another
SATA connection. If it still doesn't work, try another SATA cable. If THAT
doesn't work, your drive bit the dust.
