contents in folder on desktop disappear

What happened to the contents of my folders on the desktop and how do i get
them back in there? Not sure how the contents disappeared or where they
went, but how do i get them back together? I tried making a new folder, but
all i see in there is a dog wagging his tail and asking me what i want to
search for.

On Windows XP you have sytem restore. Click start, all
Click to expand...
programs, accessories, tools,system restore. Pick a
restore date before you lost your files.
