Constant Prompting? UAC?

I just finished building a new system and I installed Windows Vista Ultimate
on it. While overall I am ok with the new Windows I am getting tired of the
constant prompting whenever I do something as simply as move, delete or copy
a short cut in the start menu programs (to get it all cleaned up.). Having
to click on 4 different dialog boxes to give Windows permission to create a
new start menu group for example is going to drive me batty.

I know why Microsoft did UAC, but please tell me there is a way to tell UAC
what to prompt me about and what not to prompt be about. Though I doubt it.
Knowing Microsoft it is either an all or nothing feature.

Suggestions please? Do I have turn UAC off or live with the constant
prompting?

Thanks,

using policy control there is a way to adjust the warning levels of UAC.
I do not know the procedure, but you should be able to search at ms KB or google for something like
adjusting uac prompts
personally I do not like it either, but tolerate it because my system is safer from intrusions.

if I have to or plan to do a lot of clean up I make lists and do them all at one time from either safe mode or with uac turned off. and the internet disabled.

If I turn off UAC, there will always be a warning on the taskbar. If I
disable that warning, then all security related warning including
virus update etc will be disabled. Seems like Microsoft want to force
people to use UAC, period.

The UAC is prompting for everything, and many will prompt for two
actions. I agreed that it's better to allow user to have so control
over what to prompt and what not.

You can turn it off, but it's my understanding it might lead to difficulties
with software installs because api's, msi's, etc..., will not run with
elevated privileges.
I think we all better learn to live with UAC, something similar is standard
on Linux distros, and Mac, which doesn't have it, is running on BSD is a
much more secure platform and
because of it's low market share is not subject to the same number of
attacks. UAC is here to stay -- we'll see how it pans out.

I agree with you! When you open something, up comes security window asking
you if you are the one that started it; and if you are, do you want to
continue? It is just plain stupidity! And a waste of my time! I am like you,
I have work to do online, not spend the day clicking.

it is possible to adjust the level of prompting using security policies.
search for the instructions. they have been posted several times.

Exactly what are you guys doing?

Build a new machine, turn off UAC...do all of your "fussiness" to get
the desktop how you like it..then turn it back on.
I so rarely see the UAC prompts .. are you guys fiddling with the knobs
or something?

I also uses RedHat Linux and iBook. For Linux, I turn selinux
completely and on iBook, it's not promote you as much as Vista. I am
not saying UAC is useless, I just want them to make it not to prompt
twice for any single operation (even a file move will have to click
twice, hardly to believe that someone can "live with this").

No just using it. The thing prompts you everything time you want to create a
folder in certain areas. I work hard to keep my computer clean and organized
and UAC makes that a nightmare. Type of MS to do an all or nothing type of
thing. You should be able to tell it what you want it watch and prompt for
an what you don't.

But where are you creating these folders? Tell me exactly the process
because I don't see this and I can't understand what you guys are doing
to prompt this. One of the things that we need to remember is that
desktop is not a file storage location nor is c:\ Those are two stupid
places to be saving stuff. As George Carlin would say our "stuff" needs
to be elsewhere.

Stick files where they should be filed and I don't see these prompts.

So .. where are you doing these folders?

Honey it is my computer. Until Bill Gates starts giving out hard drives and
other computer goodies I will put my files and directory any damn place I
please. The fact remains Microsoft should NOT have made UAC an all or
nothing setup. Anyone with 1 brain cell knows that. You should be able to
tell it what you want to watch and what you don't want to watch. Turning it
off was the best thing I ever did. If your too cheap to buy security
software then maybe you need it. Also, if your too stupid, some people will
open or run anything they get over the internet. Stupid people need it. I
don't.
