After I installed the XP service pack that recently came out I get constant
Hard Disk Access/Thrashing in XP. The hard drive light is on almosgt all the
time and it has raised the noise level a bit of the overall system.

Any pointers on how to get it to stop or slow down.. never had the problem
before installing the new XP service pack.

I would start by trying to identify if some particular program or process is
causing it. See what's eating up CPU time in Task Manager. Also, see if it
happens in Safe Mode and Selective startup (using msconfig) to exclude start
up programs. Post the results.

System idle process sits on or around 98% while the disk is thrashing.. Will
check safe mode.

System Idle is what gets run to keep the CPU occupied when there is
nothing whatever else to do.

This sounds to me like the indexing service indexing every document on
disk, to speed up searches. Except in serious Offices it is of doubtful
benefit. Go to Control Panel - Admin tools - Services, look down for
Indexing service and double click it. Click Stop, when it has stopped
..Set Startup type to Disabled, click Apply, OK
