Connection problems after reinstall

D

David

After an XP reinstall reccommended by Dell I lost all my
dial-up-networks and am unable to start Remote Access
Connection Manager (get error message 5: Access denied)
or Remote Access Auto Connection Mananger (Error 1086)
under services. This means I am unable to use the
connection wizard to set new dial-up-connection. Can
anyone help with this Thanks, David

Hi David -

Try starting those services. Go to Start --Run--type in services.msc, click
ok and in the right side panel, navigate to those two services. If it says
they're stopped, start them by right-clicking or double-clicking. I'm not
sure that this is the problem, but it's worth a try.

Post back and let us know.

I am having the same problem but am a step or two ahead :)

The issue is a known problem and is because you need to re-
install SP1 for XP (see the knowledge base Q329441). That
will fix the problem. The next problem I have run into is
that now the DSL modem is lost and wont re-install. As
soon as SP1a is uninstalled - it all comes back again but
no remote connection!!

Hope it helps you and if you can get beyond the bit I am
at - please post :)

Dear Newtechie,
Thanks so much for trying to help, but unfortunately I
just can't start the two services and still get the same
two error messages. Thanks anyway, David

I have exactly the same problem David described with the same result. When I try to start Remote Access Connection Manager or Remote Access Auto Connection Mananger I get error message 5 (Access denied). It seems as if the network setup wizard does not see the modem although the rest of the system sees it and can communicate with it OK, as indicated by the response to a test. I have reinstalled XP from the CD several times with the same result. I can't try installing the update service pack update because I can't connect get to the web site to download it! I am runing on a Dell 8200 PC
