Connection icon disappears?

My connection icon in System Tray sometimes disappears although the
connection is open and working, comes back after disconnect and reconnect.
It has happened using both dial-up and USB broadband modem. Running XP/SP1
with IE/OE 6, firewall and AV up to date and use AdAware and Spybot
regularly. PC otherwise working well and this is no big deal, just
wondering what's causing it.
 
hey Kenny, it is unbelievable, I have the EXACTLY same problem you do...
I think I've already fixed that, but I am not quite sure...

I have seen this happen upon automatic re-connection attempts. I don't know
how to prevent it but I can correct it by opening
StartButton\Settings\NetworkConnections, and when the NetworkConnections
window has focus, pressing <F5> to "refresh".
