I am also having problems with a similar error. This is my error message:

'Amy's Mail', Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I am using a gmail account with Windows Mail for Vista. I have checked the
settings several times with gmails requirements and believe everything is set
up correctly. Also, I am stil receiving messages in Windows Mail, but am not
able to send.

I also just received another error with the previous one when I went to open
a message (note, I was able to receive and open the message)

Header download for the '[Gmail]' folder did not complete. Could not select
'[Gmail]' on the IMAP server. You might try refreshing your folder list to
synchronize with the IMAP server. Account: 'Amy's Mail', Server:
'imap.gmail.com', Protocol: IMAP, Server Response: 'Unknown Mailbox: [Gmail]
(Failure)', Port: 993, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCCD2

To fix that second error, right-click on the [Gmail] folder (under the
Gmail account), select Synchronization Settings, Don't Synchronize.

t-4-2 already advised you about the first error (port number should be
465 instead of 25).
