connecting to other application windows and viewing changes

Hello all.

I'm not even sure if I am posting this question to the right new group. I'm
more on a fishing expedition than anything else .. Here's what I need to
do:

I have an application that I need to monitor some minor graphic changes to
the application's UI. I have explored using windows handles to facilitate
the monitoring of such changes. I have watched "Messages" to the
application window using Spy++ .. I can find the correct window handle that
is receiving changes but it's hard to see when the graphic changes and what
the graphic is changing to. I'm asking for a little help with the following
questions:

Is there a better tool besides Spy++ to view the changes?
Are there some good articles I can read on the net regarding this topic?
Am I even posing the question to the right newsgroup?
