connecting external monitor for client presentations

how do I connect an external monitor for client presentations? I have the
monitor and the lead and have connected but it is saying NO SIGNAL, what do I
do?
 
Thers probably a key combination to turn on view on both monitors. Its CTRL
f5 on my laptop but it does vary, there's usually a little picture of two
monitors on the f key.
 
Often times, you have to turn on the projector before you turn on the
computer. Then follow what John said about your Function Keys.
