connecting 2 computers

I've got an Ethernet network at home to connect two
machines to a Cable modem. My IBM laptop is running W2K
and I have a Sony desktop running Windows XP Home. They
both have the same workgroup but neither machine can see
the other one. The router sees both machines. They both
access the internet through the same cable modem without
any problem. Is there some setting(s) that I need to
tweak?

Check you sharing settings to make sure the files and/or
folders and/or computers you want to access from the other
machine are shared.
