Connected but not enabled

I have two XP Home computers, SP-1&2 installed, both say "connected" at
100Mb, via an eithernet crossover cable, yet I can't PING either one from
the other. Thus the network (and all the parts of this simple setup are
working [or are they?], but not enabled, and I'm not showing any shared
files, or printers.
Previously, this worked fine, before a reinstall of XP Home on one of
the machines, and SP2 installed on both, and new firewalls (which are now
switched off) on both machines. Something(things?) have the machines locked
up. Any suggestions?

Hi Budd,

Could you post the results of an ipconfig /all from both systems?

If you can't ping, I doubt this is the issue because the default setting is
to allow incoming ICMP Echo requests, but what are your Windows Firewall
settings for the NICs? On, On with exceptions (like File and Printer
Sharing), Off?

Thanks,
=d=

Budd,

what kind of firewalls?

Never run two firewalls on one computer at the same time.

My recommendation for troubleshooting is to use the firewall
that is built into Windows XP, uninstall all other firewalls, at
least for a test, and enable the exception for File and Printer
Sharing in the Windows XP firewalls.

More details in http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm.
