How do I set up the XP box in my office so that I can connect from my mac at
home. I think there are permissions that have to set? I could use some very
specific instructions as the XP machine I have to use is all in Korean and I
don't read Korean!

For the office computer, the ease of doing this depends on whether it is
behind a firewall and/or a router. If just a firewall, you will have to
open ports. If a router, you will have to assign the work pc a static
IP address and do port forwarding on the router, and also open
necessary ports on the firewall. If you are not the work systems
administrator, you will need to get this information and permissions
from the sysadmin. The XP machine will also need to be set to allow
remote control.

As for how to do this with the Mac, I think you'd be best off checking
in some Mac networking newsgroups. How you do this also depends on what
version of the Mac os you are using. Normally, to share files between
OSX.xx and Windows, you need to run Samba on the Mac. I have
successfully controlled my XP desktop from a Linux box using rdp, but I
don't know if you can do this from the Mac. There may be a Mac program
that makes this all easier, something like pcAnywhere or UltraVNC.

Thanks for the info. I'll talk to the kid in my office who usually helps me
with computer issues. I think he should be able to use what you've said. As
far as the mac goes, I'm supposed to be able to connect to any network
without any additional software. I regularly connect to another windows
server at my university where I have download privileges. However, I do have
the Remote Desktop Connection app for mac in case the XP box needs me to have
it.

I'll check with my office and reply here again if I need more help.

Thanks again!
