I am the sole user on a PC and am set up as an
administrator. Just yesterday I was doing some further
familiarization with configurations and clicked on
Start/Logoff/Switch User. Upon performing the last
function, my user name and icon popped up as well as a
message "2 programs running", whereas in fact I had no
windows/programs shown on the task bar before I executed
this function. Can someone offer some explanation, remedy
or suggestion regarding this situation? I have rebooted
the PC several times today, executed the same function
and still get the same message eventhough I have no
programs running. Thanks for your help.

Not all running programs are going to show in the task bar. Before logging off you
could use Task Manager to see if it shows any applications running that may help
figure out what is going on. Otherwise write down the name of the application/process
and search your computer for the file using a wildcard search such as ccapp*.* and
you may find the file in a folder of the application using it. On my computer Norton
Systemworks has processes running in the background. They may also be associated with
startup programs that you can selectively disable using msconfig. Always run a full
virus scan on your computer with updated definitions when you think something unusual
is going on and also scan for parasites with something like AdAware. --- Steve
