Confused about saving attachments

If I "open" an attachment such as a picture, it opens in OE. Is that
correct?
If I want to put it into My Pictures I must "save" it separately?
If the attachment is a Word document, it surely cannot be "opened" by OE. Am
I correct?
Can an attachment be saved by creating a Saved folder and putting a shortcut
to it in the Send To folder?
Once I clicked Save on an attachment and it was downloaded without giving me
an option of what folder to save it in. Is there a way I can make such a
choice?

OE can display the picture, yes that's ok.

No it must be saved thru oe using it's save attachments menu.

OE always ask you where you want to save it, you might have just clicked
past that point.
