Configuring WinXP-Win2000 LAN network

A

Animesh Maurya

Hi all,

I am not sure that is this right place for me, but hope you guys will
help me either....

I am trying to connect my two machine via LAN, using a UTP cross
cable. Both the ethernet card and cable are working nice.

One machine is running WinXP professional while the other Windows
2000, I configured TCP/IP setting as 198.168.0.1 and subnet mask
255.255.255.0 on one pc and 198.168.0.2, 255.255.255.0 on the other
one.

But there configurations are not working at all, although same
settings just works fine on Win98 system.

I cannot see the other computer in 'Network Place'.

Please help me to figure out the problem.

Thanks

Best regards
AM

XP computers will not see each other since they don't have netbeui installed.
They use tcp/ip instead. This is by design. You should however still be able
to ping the other computer.

If you want to see the other pc, you can install netbeui through the xp cd
on the value-add folder. Do a search on the internet for more info on how to
install.

Note that you can also create hosts files to allow resolution of computer
names to ip addresses and thus find the computer by computer name.

did you check that both computers belong to the same workgroup?
can you ping each other?

It is okay to use NetBEUI but keep in mind that it is a unsupported protocol
in Windows XP. That means that Microsoft won't answer questions if you have
any problems with it. NetBEUI has never been required in Windows networking
and it is unnecessary to install it. All networking functions are available
using TCP/IP as the only network protocol and that is the preferred protocol
to use nowadays.
