Configuring TWAIN driver for Xerox DocuImage 620S under Win98

Terri

I'm attempting to configure a Xerox DocuImage 620S under Win98 SE using a
TWAIN driver. I got the driver
at http://www.altoimaging.com/AltoWeb/ProductSupport/ProductSupport.htm

I can run the DocuImage 620S Scan Tool 4.3.1 as downloaded from
http://www.altoimaging.com/AltoWeb/ProductSupport/ProductSupport.htm and
scan
successfully.

When I try to use either the default Windows Imaging tool or Paperport 9.0
I get the following error messages in a Window titled Docuimage 620S

"Scanner scsi communication fault, Turn off the scanner, and repeat the
requested operation"

Behind this error message is the DocuImage 620s application (xtw620s.exe)
window. Next I
get the following error message.

"Can not start xtw620s.exe. Please close other applications then retry the
TWAIN session"

The next error message I get is.

"Out of memory, not enough memory for the TWAIN device. Close other programs
and try again."

Finally I get "Scanner or scanner handler error"

If I try to start xtw620s.exe manually it does not open.

In the device manager the Xerox DocuImage 620S is listed under Imaging
device
with a exclamation mark. The device status is "The NTKERN.VXD device loader
(s) for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2).
To fix this, click Update Driver and Update the device driver.

When I update the device driver I can browse to the inf file downloaded from
www.altoimaging.com but it won't load it with the message "The specified
location does not contain information about your device". I can load a
driver
from the default windows inf location.

Can someone confirm that the driver at
http://www.altoimaging.com/AltoWeb/ProductSupport/ProductSupport.htm
will work with Win98? I believe it can but would like confirmation.

Any troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Dear Terri,

I have had a similar problem under Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6a).

For me, the scanner driver and software was installed when I
was logged in as Administrator. The Administrative account
could use the software just fine, but any account that was
not a member of the administrative group could not and would
instead receive the error messages you described below.

It turns out that this problem occurred when the program
tried to access a registry key

(I think it was)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Xerox

and its subkeys.

This key seemed to hold information about the scanner and its driver.
By default, the driver opens the key while requesting a lot of
(unnecessary?) permissions. However, only the administrator group
has all of these permissions, by default.

By manually adding the requested permissions to the Xerox registry key
(and its descendants) for the desired users, those users were then
able to access the driver.

If you are using this Windows NT driver under Windows 98, this
might be the point of failure. I don't believe that
windows 98 has a registry, and it may be that the driver
simply reacts to a failure to open the registry due to
the absence of a registry, the same way it treats the failure
to open the registry due to inadequate permissions.

I'd first make sure that the driver you are using is a
Windows98 driver, not an NT driver.

In any case, good luck.
