Configure Forwarders

Patrick

Greetings:

I need to configure forwarders in my domain and I need to know if I need
more than one DNS server. I currently have one Win2K server AD with DNS
configured on it and two Win4.0 servers no DNS configured. I have two
questions regarding this setup.
The following are instructions I found on configuring forwarders. Line 4
reads that I should "type the first DNS server to which you want to
forward".
Does that mean it wants me to enter the IP of my DNS server or the IP
address of any external DNS server?
The wording is confusing. I'm assuming it wants an external DNS server
since my internal DNS server resolves my internal hosts, but I cannot get
outside http FQDN's resolved if I don't use my Proxy 2.0 server. I am
retiring my Proxy server and will need to browse through my firewall
instead. That is where I am headed with this.
The Win2K DNS server I have now is a root server. Can I set forwarding on
the root server or do I need a secondary DNS server to do this?

To Configure Forwarders
1 - In DNS Manager, right-click the DNS Server object, and then click
Properties.
2 - Click the Forwarders tab.
3 - Click to select the Enable Forwarders check box.
4 - In the IP address box, type the first DNS server to which you want to
forward, and then click Add.
5 - Repeat step 4 until you have added all the DNS servers to which you want
to forward.

They want the IP address of the server 'this' server will forward to.
Usually it is your ISP's DNS server.

Delete the "." (dot) forward lookup zone that is created by default. This
will allow forwarders.
