config\system file is missing or corrupt

Can anyone help with this one pls

When windows is booting up, I get the message :-

Windows could not start because the C:\windows\system32
\config\system file is missing or corrupt.

Use Recovery console to repair fault (Or words to that
effect)

When I attempt to use the Windows CD I get a blue screen
with :-

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut
down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error
screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears
again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly
installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check
your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured
and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive
corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0xF000E987, 0x00000002, 0x00000001,
0x807FE4ED)

The computer then freezes and will only reset by the
power button.

Any help pls??

Thanks
